Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips melted & cooled
  • ½ cup powdered sugar for rolling

Method

  1. Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; set aside.
  2. Cream butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla and melted chocolate until smooth.
  4. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or up to 4 hours).
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop dough into 1.5-inch balls and roll generously in powdered sugar until fully coated.
  8. Place 2 inches apart on the baking sheets and bake for 10–12 minutes.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Chill the dough thoroughly—this prevents spreading and creates the classic crackly top.
  • Double-coat the dough balls in powdered sugar (roll twice) for the best snowy contrast.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
  • Freeze unbaked dough balls for up to 3 months; bake straight from frozen, adding 2 extra minutes.
